Cinnamon: A New Tool To Control Diabetes

The devastating effects of Diabetes on the human body are well known and very little is known about how to cure it. However, a new study done by Thames Valley University of London has made a breakthrough finding by discovering the beneficial effects of cinnamon on diabetes. The aim of the study was to determine the blood glucose lowering effect of cinnamon on HbA1c, blood pressure and lipid profiles in people with type-2 diabetes, a condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body’s inability to use insulin efficiently. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people as well. This form of the disease is often related to choices of diet and lifestyle and can be controlled by diet.

For the purpose of the study, 58 type-2 diabetic patients including 25 males and 33 females aged 54.9 ± 9.8, treated only with hypoglycaemic agents and with an HbA1c more than 7 per cent were at random assigned to be given either 2 g of cinnamon or placebo daily for 12 weeks.

The results of the study revealed that in the group that consumed cinnamon,   the mean HbA1c was considerably decreased (P<0.005) from 8.22% to 7.86% as compared to the placebo group which was 8.55% to 8.68%. The Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were also considerably reduced (P<0.001) after 12 weeks in the group that took cinnamon from SBP: 132.6 to 129.2 mmHg and DBP: 85.2 to 80.2 mmHg as compared with the placebo group that was SBP: 134.5 to 134.9 mmHg and DBP: 86.8 to 86.1 mmHg.

A noteworthy reduction in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference was noticed at week 12 compared to baseline in the cinnamon group, but the changes were not major as compared to placebo group.

On the basis of the study, it was established that consuming 2g of cinnamon for 12 weeks significantly reduces the HbA1c, SBP and DBP among badly controlled type-2 diabetes patients. Cinnamon supplementation could be well thought-out as an extra dietary supplement alternative to regulate blood glucose and blood pressure levels along with conventional medications to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.
