Lighting your Hallway
Hallways are the corridors between the rooms in our homes and serve a very utilitarian function. But these spaces are often neglected when it comes to lighting fixtures. That’s why it’s a good idea to plan a good lighting design before you build your home. Even if you’re hallway lighting plan isn’t up to standards, you can easily install new lighting solutions to your hallway for a safe and well-lit space. Use these tips and techniques for hallway lighting and you’ll be sure to get the most out of your hallway lighting design.
Planning Ahead
Deciding what’s best for your hallway starts with a good sketch up or blueprint of the space. You don’t have to have the best drawing skills, as long as the measurements and dimensions are accurate. A tape measure and a pencil is all you need to get started with your hallway lighting design. A trip to your local lighting superstore can help you to get your drawing evaluated by a lighting expert. They can give you free advice as to what lighting solutions will work best in your design.
What Works Best?
When you’re lighting any elongated enclosed space, lighting needs to be spaced apart at the correct interval. Spacing light fixtures apart a minimum of eight feet is best for tight and dark hallways spaces. Fixtures like flush mount or semi flush mount ceiling lights can provide the best coverage in small spaces. These light sources should be at least 60 watts but no greater than 100 watts as the heat from these fixtures can get very hot in enclosed hallways spaces.
Hanging lights like pendant lights should be avoided when ceiling heights are less than ten feet. No light fixture should be less than seven feet from its base to the ground.
Wall Lighting
Wall lights—AKA wall sconces—are a great way to light up long hallway spaces. A sconce can either be aimed upward towards the ceiling or downwards towards the ground. Common height placements for upward aiming sconces are around 80 inches. Downward aiming sconces should be hung lower than eye level; around 60 inches off of the floor. This will help to prevent the light source from reflecting into the users face or eyes with the naked bulb.
Recessed Lighting
For accent lighting solutions where displays like bookshelves or wall art is going to be showcased in the hallway, recessed can lights can do the trick. These flush ceiling lights are easy to install in just about any ceiling. By attaching a dimmer switch to a series of recessed ceiling lights, you can create multiple light effects in your hallway design. Mix multiple layers of lighting effects for the ultimate in hallway lighting design.
